In an age where institutions of higher education constantly fall under the threat of cyber attacks, it is imperative that cyber security be taken seriously. In order to protect students, faculty, and staff, institutions must understand the risks associated with providing student data to organizations that do not practice good cyber hygiene. McGraw Hill, a higher education publishing company, was involved in a privacy breach that exposed thousands of files containing student data. The popular social media platform TikTok is under legal fire in multiple states across the US. Following policy-based legal responses from South Dakota and Maryland, Indiana is suing TikTok and its parent company ByteDance on the grounds of exposing children to inappropriate content and misleading users as to the privacy of the personal data collected by the social media platform. Much of the hostility toward the platform stems from the concern related to the CCP’s access to the user data of Chinese-based companies. Full Story
