Higher education institutions often stand at the forefront of academic research and technological development. Much of this research and technology is key to growing the U.S. economy. There is a risk of other nations procuring that technology to the detriment of the U.S. Congressional research has found that nations like China have been taking technology from colleges and universities nationwide. Educause is an organization dedicated to the development of IT in higher education. Educause has published a list of data privacy trends for 2024 to start the year. This list contains “Increasing need for data security and protection against threats to personal privacy” and “More calls for data-informed decision-making and reporting.” There is also a much larger push for employee care, such as mental health and hybrid workplaces. The City of New York is in the Beta phase of implementing AI tools into its websites. This push to use AI was brought about to improve user experiences and allow residents to quickly access information that may have taken copious amounts of time to find. With this tool comes the many data privacy and security threats associated with AI chatbots. These threats include data collection, misinformation, and link manipulation attacks.
